News regarding the chapter and the house

It has been awhile since we have added anything to the site, and that is the fault of the alumni club…our apologies. I am not sure how much traffic this site actually gets, but regardless, we have been remiss in keeping the page updated as we should. We launched the site in 2018, and then COVID hit, and since then it has been one challenge after another. Which brings me to the current news…

As of right now, fall 2025, we basically do not have a chapter. We are not “closed,” per se, as we have a couple semesters to start to rebuild, but the last few years have been rough. While COVID is certainly not the only culprit, it played a pretty significant role in us losing members, and after that we were never really able to recover. Of course, having a couple of hazing allegations/investigations did not help. There is a lot to the story…entirely too much to type here…but suffice it to say that we are hoping to get a group going again this upcoming semester. It will probably be a slow build, yet again, but we are certainly going to try.

Obviously, we could not afford the house and all the associated expenses if we did not have any members, but fortunately we were able to lease the hosue to TKE. They have returned to campus and were able to lease the house for two years, and the lease is renewable, of course, if we need to extend it and/or if they want to extend it. So…right now we are without any members and without a house. Not much more to say at this point.

We will try to keep you updated better as things develop. Let’s hope they develop for the better!

Gift from alumnus Gordon Hartley

The Alumni Club received notification this summer that we were the recipients of a gift from Brother Gordon Hartley. Gordon passed away a couple of years ago, but prior to his passing he chose to “give back” to Phi Sigma Kappa. He left us a gift of approximately $63,000, which was to be earmarked for scholarships. We have thus set up a Chapter Educational Fund through the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation, from which we will award two scholarships each year at homecoming and an additional two scholarships each year at A-Day. THANK YOU to Brother Hartley…we are eternally grateful for your friendship and your service to Phi Sigma Kappa, and also for your gift to support our undergraduates in their academic pursuits.

Matthew Makemson

We are way overdue in posting this, but the Alumni Club would like to notify everyone of the passing of Brother Matt Makemson. Matt passed suddenly and unexpectedly back in March. He was a dedicated brother, and he was an integral part of our transition back in 2014 into our current house. Matt served on the House Corporation, and he also served as Chapter Advisor. Matt was DAMN PROUD to be a Phi Sig, and he is certainly missed by everyone. R.I.P. Matt.

Chris Pennington

The Alumni Club would like to notify everyone of the passing of Brother Chris Pennington. Chris was one of the two young men who approached the Alumni Club in 2002 to start our Interest Group, which became the Omicron Deuteron Colony, which became the Omicron Deuteron Chapter we have today. Chris loved Phi Sigma Kappa dearly, and we all loved Chris. He will be missed very much. R.I.P. Chris.

Services for Chris will be Tuesday August 28 at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
